MIL-HDBK-1884 (AT), DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE HANDBOOK COATING, PLASMA SPRAY DEPOSITION (14 MAR 1998) [SUPERSEDING MIL-STD-1884A]., NOTE: MIL-STD-1884A(AT) has been redesignated as a handbook, and is to be used for
guidance purposes only. This document is no longer to be cited as a requirement. For
administrative expediency, the only physical change from MIL-STD-1884A(AT) is this cover
page. However, this document is no longer to be cited as a requirement. If cited as a
requirement, contractors may disregard the requirements of this document and interpret its
contents only as guidance. The procedures covered by this standard are intended to ensure that plasma
spray coating operations, either manual or automated, meet prescribed requirements. This
process can be used on parts requiring protection from wear, heat, corrosion (with sealer),
abrasion and to restore dimensionally discrepant parts. This standard covers the requirements for thermal coating by means of plasma
spray deposition.

purposes only. This document is no longer to be cited as a requirement. This standard covers the procedure for applying tungsten carbide-cobalt
coatings to metal parts by the detonation process and the acceptance criteria for the finished parts. This detonation process for applying tungsten carbide-cobalt coating
provides a hard, wear-resistant surface on metal parts which do not operate at temperatures
higher than 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit (°F) [538 degrees Celsius (538°C)]. The coating is not
recommended for surfaces with deep v-shaped grooves, blind cavities, narrow holes, sharp
corners, or where deformation of the base metal is expected.
